A Little Background
Page Unified School District is in
Page, Arizona, a northern border town of the Navajo
Reservation. It is 70% Navajo, but only 20% of the
Navajo students continue toward any degree program.
Contrast that with our local school district (West
Perry School District) that has a continuing
education rate of 56%. Almost 3 times that of Native
American students.
The outlook for Native American
High School graduates is not a good one. There are
no jobs on the reservation, nearly 80% unemployment,
and little or no hope of any kind of career. Most
will stay on, or close to the reservation because it
offers cultural security and the only way of life
that these students know. Many of these students
will become discouraged and fall into poverty. The
same trap that was born when the reservation system
was instituted 6 generations ago.
Brotherhood wants to begin an
effort to change this pattern through education.
